STS Sedov technical characteristics

The four-masted barque Sedov was the first tall ship of class A equipped with auxiliary power. The ship carries her fore-and-aft and square sails on the fore mast, mainmast, mizzen, jigger and bowsprit. The spars mast columns, yards, topmasts and the bowsprit are principally made of riveted steel and supported by standing rigging (shrouds, stays and backstays). The boom, gaffs and most of the yards are of the Mannessmann Brothers seamless steel technology type. The spars and rigging weigh as many as 210 tons. The total height of the masts from keel to top is 63,5 m, the jigger is 54 m high.

On the weather decks there is equipment characteristic of any sailing vessel: pin and fife rails, belaying pins, running rigging (ropes that are not fixed and used for handling the sails) as well as deck mechanisms: manual sheet capstans for handling the sails and manual brace winches for swinging the yards.

The Sedov is provided with 36 inflatable life rafts carrying 20 persons each and two life boats. Besides, all the crew (240 people) are supplied with personal immersion suits and life jackets.

The machinery space of the barque is equipped with Wärtsilä power installation, three auxiliary diesel generators, two steam boilers, separators, pumps, air compressors and a desalination installation.
